The History of PEZheads
The History of PEZheads
PEZheads, a history
Historically speaking, some of the first PEZ-related messages on the Internet were posted on Usenet, in the rec.collecting and rec.toys.misc newsgroups. Amidst all the clutter, only a relatively small number of people were posting about PEZ. This was in mid-1995, when Internet e-mail first began to become popular. It was there that a few collectors met and began to discuss forming a mailing list.
The first incarnation of the PEZheads list, formed in August 1995 and was hosted on sirs.com by Jason Specland. It boasted a whopping 10 members. Members discussed various items of interest like stem variations, next series wishes, cool finds, etc; exactly the same types of things discussed on the PEZheads list today. The list began to grow in size and popularity, as PEZheads came out of the closet to discuss their love of these tiny plastic gems. By August 31, 1995 there were 21 PEZheads on the list.
At about the same time, Cliff Lee (without knowledge of the sirs.com list) created another mailing list for PEZ collectors on a server called clcbbs.hou.tx.us. Many of the people on the first list also joined Cliff's list. The two co-existed for a short time period but once Cliff found out about the sirs.com list, he also joined, and his mailing list became dormant.
By November 19, 1995, after a series of list outages on sirs.com, the list had found a new home at Cybercom.net. There were 125 PEZHeads on the list at the time, and that number would remain fairly constant until May 30, 1996 when a change in list-ownership required another move, this time to a new home provided by Cliff Lee on cbs-engineering.com.
This began the list's most successful period to date, with membership eventually growing to 820 members. Ironically, that success is exactly what necessitated the list's next move. In March 1999, Cliff was forced to announce that the PEZheads list would be moving to a new home, because the present server load and bandwidth requirements were just too high for him to continue to host it.
Thus, on March 7, 1999, Cliff requested that all PEZheads big and small begin to migrate to the list's new home at Mystery.com. Just over 600 PEZheads subscribed to the new list.
Never content to stay in one place for long, a new home was yet again needed as the end of 1999 approached. On December 7th, 1999, the list began it’s last big move, this time to Onelist.com. Due to the some of the features that Onelist provides and with a larger group of list moderators, the list was moved at a record pace, with approximately seventy-five percent of the list membership re-subscribed to the new list within the first four to five days.
Since this time, the PEZheads list has moved twice more... each time because the list server was merged into another group. The first of these changes involved OneList being merged into eGroups. Then on January 26th, 2001, eGroups was officially merged into Yahoo Groups. Despite these mergers, the list moved to it’s new home relatively smoothly.
Since 2003, PEZheads has continued to grow each year. Currently we have almost 1400 list members spread out all over the world... and PEZheads remains the premier discussion list for the PEZ collecting hobby!
